May-June Joblessness Up In 90 Percent Of Metro Areas

WASHINGTON (AP) - Labor Department data show that more than 90
percent of the nation's largest metropolitan areas saw their
unemployment rates climb in June, compared to the previous month.

An Associated Press analysis finds unemployment rates rose in
348 of more than 370 metro areas from May to June.

The Labor Department says that's the sixth month in a row the
largest cities saw their jobless rates rise.

Some of the biggest increases hit college towns, where the
summertime exodus of students causes bars, restaurants and other
businesses to cut staff.

And then there's the Detroit area, which was hit hard by
manufacturing layoffs tied to the beleaguered auto industry.

The overall U.S. unemployment rate reached 9.5 percent in June.
It's expected to hit 9.7 percent when the July numbers are released
next week.
