Poem - Think about it

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I was not a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

The poem was published in a 1955 book by Milton Mayer, They Thought They Were Free,

based on interviews he conducted in Germany several years earlier.

Rewritten to reflect the current predicament we are in:

When the Democrats came for the unborn

I remained silent;
I was already born.

When they came for the rich
I did not speak out;
I was not rich.

When they locked up the businessmen,
I remained silent;
I was not a businessman.

When they came for the conservatives,
I remained silent;
I was not conservative.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

ASK YOURSELF; SHOULD I REMAIN SILENT WHILE MY LIBERTY IS STOLEN FROM ME?
